Powder coating line speed

Powder coating line speed refers to the speed at which a workpiece moves through the entire coating process on the conveyor system, from pretreatment to curing.

It is a critical parameter that directly links production efficiency and coating quality, requiring precise calibration.

Several factors determine the optimal line speed.

  1. The curing parameters are non-negotiable:
    If operating at baking temperatures (e.g., 200°C), the line speed must be consistent with the desired curing time (typically 15-20 minutes). Exceeding this speed will cause the powder to cure insufficiently (resulting in poor adhesion or softness), while slowing down will waste energy and reduce yield.
  2. Workpiece complexity and coating thickness are important:
    Complex parts require more time to apply powder evenly, while thicker coatings require longer curing times – both require slower line speeds.
  3. The pretreatment efficiency also limits the speed;
    If the degreasing or rinsing step takes 10 minutes, the line cannot move faster than the slowest pretreatment stage.

Improper speed management can lead to costly problems: high speeds can lead to uneven coatings or curing defects, while slow speeds can reduce daily yields.

Ultimately, line speed is a balance – neither speed nor quality alone, but rather combining both with process capabilities.
